Course Work: MSE 480 Materials Dissection

Final Comments

We have now limited our design to two materials; however, we find that the original design was in fact the one of the ideal solutions, yet we also found a possible alternative material. In this case, the critical design factor turned out to be the coefficient of friction between aluminum and the pad material, which quickly brought us to the original material, as no other could match rubber for its high coefficient of friction. Of our two final materials, the choice between the two cannot be made without giving consideration to the application, high performance racing bikes, or lower cost casual bikes for the average rider. Clearly there is a considerable amount of thought that goes into the design of a bicycle brake pad.
