Course Work: MSE 480 Materials Dissection
Final Materials
From the selection process, we have two primary materials to choose from, filled butyl rubber, and copolymer modified rubbers. To decide between the two, one must finally examine the cost, of the two materials. We find that the cost of the copolymer-modified rubbers is almost three times that of filled butyl rubber. A trade off must then be made by the manufacturer or consumer, either pay a high price for performance, or save money and make do with lower performance and wear characteristics. This is not an unrealistic trade off, as it is one that is encountered regularly, as there are casual cyclists, and those that compete seriously. The serious cyclist could no doubt justify the increased cost, as the performance gain could mean the difference between first and second place..
